Course Objectives To provide the knowledge and skills about changes in body systems with aging, theories of aging, concepts related to aging, aging and healthy aging, importance of physical activity in geriatric population, the features and examples of comprehensive physical therapy assessment and evidence based exercise program for healthy and diagnosed elderly individuals.
Learning Outcomes The students who succeeded in this course;
  • explain the aged related changes occurred in human body systems;
  • define the concepts of geriatrics and theories of aging;
  • explain the principles and concepts of geriatric assessment including the international classification of functioning, disability and health (ICF);
  • define diseases and problems that are specific to the geriatric population and frequently seen in this population;
  • apply the physiotherapy evaluation and the relevant exercise program for the elderly;
  • 1. apply the appropriate physiotherapy program in aging-related pathologies.

Course Description In this course, theories of aging, epidemiological characteristics of the elderly population, causes of mortality and morbidity will be discussed reviewing the concept of geriatrics, the geriatric rehabilitation team and the role of the physiotherapist. By addressing the systemic changes that occur with aging, evidence-based practices will be explained for the evaluation and planning of exercise programs required for healthy aging and individual and group exercises suitable for physical activity in advanced age, as well as a physiotherapy program suitable for pathologies.
